It’s hard to think of a scene from Netflix’s new series Wednesday that is more popular than the iconic dance scene starring Jenna Ortega.

The moment sparked a viral meme when fans filmed themselves doing the choreography and used Lady Gaga‘s throwback song “Bloody Mary” to soundtrack their moves. Mother Monster herself even got in on the fun!

However, the moment was slightly soured when Jenna revealed that she tested positive for COVID-19 while filming those very scenes. Fans questioned if safety precautions were being taken on set.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator Miles Millar addressed the situation and assured fans that safety precautions were followed.

“We had extremely stringent COVID protocols that were enforced all the way through the dance,” they explained. “Jenna tested negative the day before, and only when a positive test came back, and as soon as it did, she was escorted off the set and went into quarantine for I think 10 days.”

Miles added that “there was no compromising of that in any decision to keep filming and film Jenna ill or sick, it was never a discussion,” opining that “it was one of those things that basically was sort of blown out of proportion in terms of a story.”

Wednesday creators Al Gough and Miles Millar were asked about the possibility during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

By the sounds of it, anything is possible, but it isn’t guaranteed.

Al stressed that “female friendship” was one of the most important components of the show for them and noted that Wednesday and Enid are at “the center of that.”

Miles agreed that “sisterhood is key to the show.”

“We’re not gonna discount anything, and, obviously, sometimes characters reveal themselves, which is the fun thing we love about television, that it’s an organic journey,” Miles added about the possibility of a relationship developing. “We have a roadmap, and we’d like to have routes along that map that take you in unexpected directions. So, we’re open to everything. We wanna explore that friendship in every way, but we’re not gonna be, this is where you sometimes get misdirected by fans and things like that, so it’s just being really open to see how those characters develop and that friendship. As Al said, that friendship is key to our sort of vision of the show.”

The Wednesday and Xavier romance is happening – well, kind of!

Wednesday co-stars Jenna Ortega and Percy Hynes White are filming a new romantic comedy together in Utah.

Just recently, during an interview promoting the hit Netflix series, Percy shared that the pair were working on a movie.

The movie they’re working is a rom-com called Winter Spring Summer or Fall, according toDeadline, and follows Remi and Barnes, two very different teenagers who meet by chance in the winter of their senior. They then spend four days together over the course of a year that will change their lives forever.

Jenna will also be producing the movie, along with MPCA’s Brad Kevoy, Wall Fly’s Josh Shader and David Wulf.

About Fate writer Tiffany Paulsen is directing the feature, which began filming at the end of October in Salt Lake City, according to her Instagram. Dan Schoffer wrote the script, with revisions by Tiffany.

Can you hear that blood-curdling “Scream”?

“Scream 6,” the next film in the iconic franchise, directed by Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, is the first “Scream” movie without iconic final girl Neve Campbell, but that’s not all that’s changed. While other iterations of the series have traveled outside the confines of fictional suburban town Woodsboro, this time, Ghostface is going even farther afield: he wants to take a bloody bite out of the Big Apple.

“Scream 6,” in theaters March 31, 2023, stars the new core group of survivors from “Scream 5,” including Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding. “Scream 4” alum Hayden Panettiere is back as wise-cracking cinephile Kirby, while Dermot Mulroney makes his franchise debut as a police officer. Courteney Cox will reprise the role of reporter Gale Weathers. The script is penned by “Scream 5” co-screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

“It just gets more and more gory,” star Ortega said earlier this year. “I think that this is probably the most aggressive and violent version of Ghostface we’ve ever seen, which I think will really be fun to shoot.”

Co-star Barrera, who plays Ortega’s onscreen half-sister and daughter of the original Ghostface slasher (Skeet Ulrich), added that the New York City premise is “20 times more mortifying.”

Longtime “Scream” star Campbell announced in June 2022 that she was exiting the franchise after almost 30 years as Sidney Prescott. “I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to this franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years,” Campbell said of the salary dispute that led to her exit. “As a woman in this business, I think it’s really important for us to be valued and to fight to be valued. I honestly don’t believe that if I were a man and had done five installments of a huge blockbuster franchise over 25 years, that the number that I was offered would be the number that would be offered to a man.”

She added, “In my soul, I just couldn’t do that. I couldn’t walk on set feeling that — feeling undervalued and feeling the unfairness, or lack of fairness, around that.”

Campbell has appeared in all five “Scream” films since the original movie, directed by Wes Craven, was released in 1996. All in all, the franchise has grossed more than $744 million at the box office.

“I told them very early on that I didn’t want her to be in the middle of a love triangle,” she shared with ETalk. “I’ve always been against the love triangle idea.”

In “Woe is the Night,” the fourth episode of Netflix’s latest smash-hit series “Wednesday,” star Jenna Ortega birthed the latest dance craze with a scene in which she boogies down to “Goo Goo Muck” by The Cramps. But while the scene has since gone viral on TikTok, filming it was a terrible experience for Ortega, who tested positive for COVID almost immediately afterwards.

In an interview with NME released ahead of the whole sensation, Ortega said that she woke up the day the scene was filmed feeling extremely sick. Production had her shoot the dance while awaiting her COVID results.

“It’s crazy because it was my first day with COVID so it was awful to film,” Ortega said. “I woke up and – it’s weird, I never get sick, and when I do, it’s not very bad – I had the body aches. I felt like I’d been hit by a car and that a little goblin had been let loose in my throat and was scratching the walls of my esophagus. They were giving me medicine between takes because we were waiting on the positive result.”

Ultimately that positive result materialized, and Ortega quarantined until she tested negative. In her interview with NME, Ortega said she asked to redo the scene — which she choreographed herself — after she recovered, but the production schedule was too tight. “Wednesday” viewers see the take from when she was sick.

In a statement to IndieWire, “Wednesday” production company MGM wrote that “strict COVID protocols were followed and once the positive test was confirmed production removed Jenna from set.”

With “Wednesday” going gangbusters, the NME story has resurfaced, and users on social media are criticizing how MGM handled the filming of the scene with a sick Ortega and a pending COVID test.

According to numbers from Netflix, over the course of its first 12 days of availability (November 23 to December 4), the “Addams Family” spinoff series has been watched by over 115 million households for a total of 752.52 million hours viewed. This puts it at No. 3 on the streamer’s list of the top 10 English-language TV seasons, behind “Stranger Things 4” and “Monster: the Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” both of which logged over a billion hours within 60 days of tracking.

The other series on the list include the first two seasons of “Bridgerton,” Season 3 of “Stranger Things,” Season 5 of “Lucifer,” Season 1 of “The Witcher,” “Inventing Anna,” and Season 2 of “13 Reasons Why.” With the ascension of “Wednesday,” the final season of “Ozark,” released this year, was quickly dethroned from the pantheon.

In addition, “Wednesday” beat its own record for most hours viewed in a week to log 411.3 hours between November 28–December 4, topping the Netflix English-language series list in 89 countries. During the show’s debut week over the Thanksgiving holiday — it debuted November 23, meaning it only had five days of tracking — the show set the record for hours viewed in a week with 341.23 million hours. In the world of “The Addams Family,” Wednesday Addams has been a perpetual 10-year-old girl with a deadpan wit and a love for the murderous and macabre. It was something that Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, creators of Netflix’s new series “Wednesday,” wanted to change with their take, separating Wednesday from her family and giving her her own chance to shine.

“She was never the center of the scene,” Millar told IndieWire via Zoom.

Using the illustrations of Charles Addams, who crafted “The Addams Family” back in 1938, as inspiration, Gough and Millar went back and forth on what type of world Wednesday would inhabit. “Because of the ‘Harry Potter’ of it all [the question was] should she be at a regular school and then be a fish out of water?” Millar said. “But it felt kind of one-note and she’d always have to return home at night to the family that [we] wanted to get away from.”

Because Tim Burton directed four of the series’ eight episodes, his voice also needed to be taken into consideration. “We always say the tone of the show is really the Tim Burton tone,” said Gough, which manifests in Wednesday’s patented dark striped wardrobe, compliments of Burton’s long-time costume designer Colleen Atwood, as well as her dark sense of humor. This is a series that culminates a high school dance by dumping blood red paint on everyone, after all. “It all feels very accessible to a large audience while still feeling kind of anti,” Gough said.

But while Wednesday Addams has a murderous streak to her, there was hesitation as to how dark things could go on the show. The creators already knew the plotline itself would be heavy, with Wednesday solving a murder mystery, but they also knew the character herself would have to be suitably macabre, and it left Netflix with some pause. “Netflix was always very supportive and the executives were huge Addams Family fans,” Gough said.

But, as Millar pointed out, there was a desire to make small changes. “We still did have executives wanting to cut some lines,” he said. The line in question comes when Wednesday’s roommate Enid (Emma Meyers) encourages Wednesday to “take a stab at being social” to which Wednesday responds that she’s fond of stabbings. “That’s the whole point of the character,” Millar said. “To lose that or dilute that is a betrayal of the character.”

Thankfully, the line stayed in the series.

It’s a tad ironic that Netflix would hesitate at a line like that, especially considering the series involves murder, including the death of Nevermore Academy’s principal, Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie). Both creators said they didn’t want this to mimic “Scooby Doo”; the characters’ actions here have consequences. In the case of Weems’ death, the pair knew it needed to have significance, and not just because Christie played another beloved (and incredibly strong) character, Brienne of Tarth in “Game of Thrones” and fans would be sad to see her go.

“Gwendolyn loved it,” Gough said. “She read all eight scripts before she had signed on. You see Gwendolyn in a way you’ve never seen her before. She’s incredibly glamorous and she inhabits that character so well.”

“I actually felt really insecure about this. I choreographed that myself, and I think it’s very obvious that I’m not a dancer or choreographer,” Jenna said in a new reaction video from Netflix.

Co-star Emma Meyers, who plays her roommate Enid, said, “This is my favorite scene. We brought this up so many times… It’s fantastic.”

Hunter added, “The last two days this is all we’ve been talking about… It’s amazing!”
